Nonsuch Bay is a new 40 acre waterfront resort in South East Antigua. It is the only resort in the Caribbean, accessed by direct flights from Europe and North America, to offer luxurious accommodation with specialist facilities for sailing.
The new resort is different for Antigua as the accommodation is made up of luxury apartments and waterfront and hilltop villas. Location Nonsuch Bay is twenty minutes from English Harbour and thirty minutes from the airport and Antigua’s capital St John’s. Accommodation
The resort consists of 62 fully serviced apartments, 15 waterfront villas (due to be completed in 2010) and three larger hilltop villas. The apartments have been built in a natural amphitheatre overlooking the secluded palm fringed sandy beach. The sloping nature of the site ensures that every property has unobstructed views of the bay. The three larger hilltop villas look out across the bay from an elevated position on the headland. The architecture is inspired by the local Georgian Colonial style with white washed walls, wood shingle roofs and traditional verandahs. There are wide areas between each row of buildings to give a sense of space and allow maximum privacy. The interiors are spacious and light with high ceilings and large living areas opening onto oversized verandas with outdoor furniture and views of Nonsuch Bay. Interiors are decorated in a clean luxurious style with hardwood floors, white walls and contemporary furniture. Each apartment and waterfront villa comes with a modern well-equipped kitchen featuring Viking appliances and Kohler hardware. There are 22 one bedroom apartments, 22 two bedroom apartments, eight two bedroom beach cottages and ten three bedroom apartments. All apartments have an i-pod compatible sound system, flat screen TV with cable TV, high speed internet, a washing machine and drier and air conditioning. The 15 waterfront villas have three bedrooms, a spacious terrace, a dining room and private plunge pool. Two hilltop villas have five bedrooms and five bathrooms and the third villa has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. All have large living and eating areas, a pool and wraparound verandas to maximise their views. Dining
The club house restaurant is located on a bluff overlooking Nonsuch Bay. Diners are seated at tables on a cascading series of terraces contoured along the edge of the hillside. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and a more informal menu is served to guests on the beach at lunch.
An experienced team lead by Chef Nigel Martin has created a menu which draws inspiration from around the world. During the day menus emphasise fresh, simple Caribbean and international favourites. In the evening diners can relax in the club lounge for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, while choosing from an Asian and international-inspired dinner menu and extensive wine list.
The restaurant will also be open to non-guests and visiting yachts. The resort offers resident guests a half-board plan at the club house restaurant. For those guests wishing to dine in the privacy of their apartment, the resort can organise food to be delivered to order or arrange a private chef for the evening. Sailing
The conditions at Nonsuch Bay are outstanding for small boat sailing. Two square miles of enclosed waters are protected from the open sea by a large barrier reef and the bay faces the consistent and warm trade winds. Until now it has been the preserve of a few cruising yachts dropping anchor to dine at Harmony Hall’s restaurant or to snorkel at Green Island and the reef.
Sailing at Nonsuch Bay is run by Richard Chadburn and an experienced team. Richard brings invaluable sailing and hospitality experience: an ISO (2 man skiff) world champion; professional superyacht skipper with nine years of cruising and racing; former manager at Antigua Yacht Club and three years as a sailing instructor at Neilson beach resorts.
Nonsuch Bay’s fleet of sailboats is built around the modern range from LDC Racing Sailboats supplemented by Hobie Cat beach catamarans. In addition to a range of dinghies, there are 24 foot RS Elites offering the stability and security of a yacht, striking ‘America’s Cup’ lines and fast and responsive sailing for crews of up to four adults.
Guests can book sailing as an inclusive package or pay by day or half day in resort. The inclusive sailing package allows as much sailing as they want, a ‘white glove sailing’ service, group tuition, refresher courses, technique clinics, trips and activities for all ages and abilities. Additionally private sailing instruction can be booked in advance or at the resort. Tuition As much as possible tuition will be adapted to suit the interests and experience of guests. Beginners and those new to dinghy sailing can start with instruction on the shore-based simulator and sailing accompanied by an instructor in an RS Vision or Elite, and then progress on to tuition in an RS Q’ba singlehander.
Those with some experience may appreciate a refresher session on techniques or an introduction to the different types of boats. There will also be clinics for those wanting to learn or improve more advanced skills such as handling asymmetric spinnakers, trapeze work and racing strategies. Private tuition can also be arranged and is generally available in the afternoons.
Kitesurfing The huge area of enclosed flat water and the consistent trade winds make Nonsuch Bay ideal conditions for kitesurfing. The kitesurfing school is based at Nonsuch Bay and sailing takes place at the far side of the bay starting from a beach on Green Island. International Kiteboarding Organisation- certified instructors have a safety conscious and structured approach to lessons. Starting with an introduction to the equipment and learning to control a kite from the beach, within the first two hours you will progress to the first experience of flying the kite from the water. Subject to availability kitesurfing can be booked in the resort or in advance. Other Facilities
There is an infinity pool next to the club house, with panoramic views over the bay and two further infinity pools set in the resort’s gardens, close to the apartments. The resort will offer in-room spa treatments Two tennis courts are due to be completed in early 2010. The uninhabited Green Island Reef Marine Reserve is a short boat ride away on the fringe of the bay. The island has many secluded white sandy beaches and is a excellent spot for snorkelling. Kids There is supervised childcare for children between the ages of four and seven, offering a wider range of activities on the beach and sailing trips in small groups with an adult instructor. During school holidays, children of eight or older can join the sailing programme and try other activities including kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkelling. Rates Prices start from £425 per person for seven nights, based on two people sharing a one bedroom apartment on a room only basis. A week in a one bedroom apartment with the half-board package and inclusive sailing starts from £800 per person. The price includes airport transfers, but not international flights.
