Mr Beams Security Light
Reviewed by the What To Do With The Kids Team
When we heard about the Mr Beams security light we really liked the concept and thought it would be a great product to review for the site - especially with the summer camping/festival season coming up.
The idea is that this is a small, handy light you can hang in your tent. It has a motion sensor, so if you leave your tent unattended and someone tries to get in, the light will go on. We have tried the light on two trips, one in a tent and one in a camping pod, and we can report that this is a really handy little gadget to have.
The light itself is very small and weighs nothing, so it can be tucked into your baggage very easily. To get started, all you need to do is put the batteries in, and you're ready to go.
There is no on/off button, which is a bit of an issue if you don't want to use the light all the time and waste the battery power. We just lay it with the motion sensor on the floor when we didn't want to use it. In any case, the light only starts to work when it gets dark, so you won't waste any battery power during daylight hours.
The light doesn't have a stand (there are a couple of holes in the back you could use to suspend it from nails, for example, if you have somewhere to suspend it from), so it wasn't very easy for us to find a place for it in the tent - but I am sure if we had opened the packet and looked at the light carefully before our trip we would have found a solution to take with us to be able to hang the light up some how. In the camping pod there was no problem as we had a little shelf we were able to put the light on.
The motion sensor works really well, and when the light goes on it is fairly powerful for such a small piece of kit. It did exactly what we needed it to when we tried it out with the tent, and when we tried it in the pod it provided the same amount of light as a small torch.
We think that the Mr Beams security light it also useful as a night light, eg when the kids wake up in a strange environment in the middle of the night - but obviously you would need to turn the light away from where you are sleeping, otherwise every time you turn over in the night you'll set it off!
All in all we think this is a well-priced and handy little piece of equipment, and it did make us feel more comfortable about leaving the tent. An on/off button would be useful for the next model.
