Camping in Venice
Venice camping holidays
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region of Italy and is situated across a group of 118 small islands. Venice is a city like no other, built around a network of 177 canals in a shallow lagoon, connected by some 400 bridges. In the old centre, the canals serve the function of roads and almost every form of transport is on water or on foot. The islands of Lido and Pellestrina and the peninsula of Cavallino-Treporti form a barrier between the Venetian Lagoon and the Adriatic Sea.
Venice itself is often regarded as a living museum and there are numerous famous sites in the city such as St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the Grand Canal and the Piazza San Marco. Combined with the beautiful coastline around it, there’s plenty to keep a family busy and happy on a camping holiday.
Things to do in Venice while you’re camping
It may be a bit of a cliché, but a gondola ride in Venice is still the most magical way to see the city. Kids will no doubt find it magical to drift along the canals, but it’s unfortunately not a cheap experience. If you’re on a budget you can take one of the traghetto gondolas – small ferries that cross the Grand Canal for a quick taste of travel by gondola. Or take the number 1 vaporetto (water busy), which travels all the way down the Grand Canal – a ticket allows you to hop on and off along the route (as long as you keep going in the same direction!).
Venice is also famous for its beautiful Venetian Masks. Peter Pan Masks (near the San Stae vaporetto stop) allows the whole family to pick out and decorate a traditional mask, and you get to keep your finished masterpiece! And for a stunning view over the city’s rooftops and out into the lagoon, climb (or take the lift) up St Mark’s Basilica’s Tower. The Basilica itself is also stunning and you can prebook tickets to avoid queues. Venice also has a wonderful National History Museum with dinosaur fossils and skeletons!
Away from the city itself, there’s lots to do and see. The Venetian Riviera has plenty of beautiful Blue Flag beaches. Lido di Jesolo is a purpose-built beach resort, with 16km of sandy beach to relax on. Further up the coast is Bibione, surrounded by beautiful pine forests and Cavallino Treporti’s wide and sandy beach. You can try your hand at a variety of water sports, or do some snorkelling in the clear waters. Kids are also sure to love a visit to Aqualandia, a water park offering whirlpool lagoons, swimming pools, spiral slides, wave machines, water slides and a pirate ship, as well as shallow areas for young children.
