During winter, when the nights are drawing in and temperatures drop, it can be tempting to snuggle up with the kids in front of the TV during the weekends. While there’s nothing better than this sometimes, winter — and the lead-up to Christmas in particular — can also be the perfect time to get out and about with your kids.

However, as the great British weather is as unpredictable as ever at this time of year, it’s important to get fully prepared for your winter days out. To help you, here’s our pick of all of the essentials you need for a family day out in winter.

A good-quality backpack

If you don’t already own one, you should make sure to invest in a good-quality backpack for the winter. As you’ll require so much more stuff than at other times of the year in case the weather turns, this will give you the space you need to carry all of the essentials.

Pick a waterproof backpack in a neutral colour with plenty of easy-to-access compartments for a versatile and convenient bag that will allow you to take everything you need on hikes and around busy winter attractions.

Walking boots

Even on sunny days, the ground is almost always damp and muddy over the winter months. It’s therefore essential that your whole family is kitted out with some sturdy and protective walking shoes if you’re planning on going on any winter walks.

This means good-quality hiking boots for the adults and teenagers, while completely waterproof wellies make the perfect option for younger kids who are prone to splashing in puddles and traipsing in the mud — get winter footwear for the whole family at Charles Clinkard, where you’ll receive free delivery on every order.

It’s also a good idea to invest in some wipeable rubber floor mats for your car — these will make your vehicle easy to clean after passengers enter with wet and muddy shoes. You should also keep plastic carrier bags in the boot of your car to place muddy boots in, and bring spare trainers along to change into for the journey home — this will keep the worst of the dirt off your car.

Waterproof jackets

There’s nothing more miserable than getting caught in a winter shower without a waterproof jacket, so make this the first item in your backpack before you head off on a day out over winter. You can get packaway cagoules that fold neatly away into a pack for adults and kids from Trespass — these are small and lightweight enough to be stored in your bag ready for any showers.

Extra layers

Something else you shouldn’t leave your home without is some extra layers. It can be easy to underestimate the cold, especially if you’re heading out for a winter walk when the wind can pick up. It can also be hard to convince your little ones to get properly wrapped up until they’re actually out in the cold, so make sure you don’t head off without hats, scarves, and jumpers for each of your kids.

Healthy snacks

Another great thing to keep in your rucksack is snacks such as cereal bars, nuts, dried fruit, and bottles of still water. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, your party is less likely to see the bright side if they’re running on empty stomachs. A great way to keep spirits up is by bringing plenty of healthy snacks along for the journey. A flask of tea or coffee for the adults and hot chocolate for the kids is also great for warming up during a rest.

Waterproof gloves or mittens

One of the most enjoyable activities you can do with your kids during winter is having a snowball fight or making a snowman. As much fun as these activities can be, the fun is quickly drained from the occasion if bare hands become wet, freezing cold, and nigh-on impossible to warm up. Keep both little and big hands warm and everyone happy with the completely waterproof gloves and mittens from GORE-TEX, which come in both adult and children’s sizes. These will allow you all to play in the snow without ending up with stinging hands.

Hand warmers

Another great thing to take along on your winter days out are gel hand warmers, which will help warm you and your family up on really cold days. Perfect for getting the feeling back in your hands before getting behind the wheel of the car, these handy gel packs offer instant heat to help you get warm again after a few hours in the bracing winter weather.

That wraps up our pick of the essentials for a winter day out with the kids. Stock up on these and you’ll be able to make the most of the winter, no matter what the weather.
