Spring into Summer A WEEKEND OF FREE GUIDED WALKS IN AND AROUND THE CAPITAL
Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 May 2017
Walk London, a Transport for London (TfL) project, launches Spring into Summer – 40 free guided walks covering some of London’s top walking routes. All walks are designed to reveal some of London’s best secret places, parks, woodland, rivers, canals and open spaces.
There are walks to suit all ages and interests.
Family walks, for families with young children, include The Great Fire of London, where we visit key sights in the story of the fire, learn about how it was fought and why it started, and how London was rebuilt afterwards. We’ll also hear stories of some of the people affected by this cataclysmic event. There will be fun worksheets for children to complete and exciting prizes to be won. Our Family Favourites walk is a popular fun walk which takes in the Tube station that Harry Potter and Mr Weasley use and reveals how it could have made Big Ben fall over. We visit a location visited by Paddington Bear, and learn a clever trick for staying lucky. A fun-filled quiz and prizes for children round off the walk. The walk Goodnight Mister Tom is inspired by the much-loved book. We’ll hear what life was like for those who remained in London during the Blitz and explore the heroic work undertaken, as well as tales of animal bravery.
Other walks include The Coffee House Tour: join broadcaster and acclaimed author Dr Matthew Green for an immersive, critically acclaimed tour of London’s original – and best – coffee houses in the City of London. Discover how "bitter Muhammedan gruel" transformed the face of the city, brought people together, and inspired brilliant ideas that made the modern world. The walk includes free shots of 17th-century-style coffee brewed "Black as Hell, Strong as Death, Sweet as Love".
We will also explore 6.5 miles of rural London with ‘The Green Chain's most popular route’. This lovely walk will give you the chance to really stretch your legs as it takes us 6.5 miles along the most recent part of London's first long-distance footpath, which dates from 1977. This section, opened in September 2010, is the most popular part of the Green Chain network, and after taking part you won't be at all surprised by that!
Participants need to book their free place on all walks using the Walk London website.
London is a fantastic city to explore by foot, with many hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. Walking is also proven to reduce stress, and is a simple way to improve your physical health. The free guided walks are perfect for singles, couples, families or groups who want to discover what’s on London’s doorstep – culturally, historically and environmentally.
The Spring into Summer weekend is organised by Walk Unlimited and funded by TfL. All walks start and finish at, or within easy reach of, public transport facilities.
