Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway

Overview

A great idea - a day out for all the family and something that is a little different! Travel back in time on a steam train through the glorious Cotswolds. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway runs from Toddington (just 15 minutes from junction 9 off the M5) to Cheltenham Race Course (the station is situated in the grounds of the racecourse itself) on a 24 mile round trip. The journey takes about and hour and a half, and apart from the stunning views of the Malvern Hills and the Black Mountains of Wales, you travel through a long curved tunnel (reputed to have a resident ghost) and over a 15 arch viaduct. On most operating days, your rover ticket gives you freedom of the line for the whole day so you can experience the noise, smells and excitement of a real steam train. Then perhaps later in the day you can travel in a 1960s diesel railcar where you have 360 degree views and the children have the chance to stand behind the driver and see exactly what he is doing. There are refreshment facilities at Winchcombe and Toddington stations as well as on most of our trains, and picnic areas and a small play area as well as modern toilets with changing facilities. There is also a free children's quiz available and a free heritage trail at Toddington station. Also during the year there are many special weekends with extra special activities for children including Easter egg competitions, visits from Thomas the tank engine, and of course santa.
