Mountfitchet Castle & Norman Village of 1066 is the only motte & bailey castle in the world that has been faithfully reconstructed on its original site. A unique time capsule that is steeped in history, enabling the visitor to travel back to Norman England of 1066. Wander in and out of the many buildings, smell the log fires burning and enjoy the ambience of a bygone medieval lifestyle. Hand feed the many tame animals that roam freely throughout the 10 acre site including deer, goats, sheep, ducks and chickens.
There are many hands-on activities for everyone to enjoy including climbing towers, sitting in the stocks, trying on medieval helmets and chainmail, sitting on Harold our Jousting horse and lifting heavy Knights swords plus much more.
Adjacent to the Castle is the House on the Hill Toy Museum, the largest privately owned toy museum in the world. With dislays of toys from Victorian times up to the 1980's there's something for everyone. Not just a toy museum there are many exhibits including TV, film and theatre memorabilia, a Rock 'n' Roll show, Life size figures from Star Wars, a nostalgic WW1 & WW2 display and plus so much more.
Guarding the entrance to the toy museum are life size dinosaur figures and a try-your-hand-at-fossil-hunting hut.
All for just one admission price. A great educational, interactive and fun day out for all the family.
