The Bowes Museum

Overview

Classed as one of North East England’s top visitor attractions, The Bowes Museum’s impressive collections, outstanding exhibitions and romantic history invite children on a journey of wonder to educate and entertain.

The building is a hidden treasure, a jewel in the heart of beautiful Teesdale. The Grade 1 19th Century listed building, which has recently undergone a £12m makeover, stands proud in the historic market town of Barnard Castle where it has a wonderful story to tell.

As well as the treasures for grown-ups – which include paintings by artists such as Canaletto and Turner, some of the best European fine and decorative arts in the UK, and an acclaimed exhibition programme – there is much to keep the children amused. Toy displays, family fun days, storytelling, themed activities, children’s workshops and museum trails add to the informative and entertaining experience.

A showstopper for adults and children of all ages is the amazing Silver Swan. This life-size 240-year-old musical automaton performs every day to fascinated onlookers.

The Museum also houses the award winning Fashion & Textile Gallery, with stunning displays of historic and contemporary items from the 16th to the 20thcenturies.

When hunger beckons, Café Bowes is an ideal setting for a family meal or snack, but if a picnic is more your forte enjoy it in the 22 acres of parkland including formal gardens, a woodland walk, picnic spot and children’s play area.

Whatever the weather, The Bowes Museum is the perfect destination for a family day out.
