West Dean Gardens

Overview

West Dean Gardens is open to the public from February to December to enjoy the Victorian Walled Gardens fabulous walks on offer in the parkland, grounds and Arboretum. Children (under 16) will get FREE entry throughout the year (excluding events). Dogs  are welcome on short leads.

Early Spring is a great time to visit to see the emerging displays of snowdrops and crocuses which will set the garden ablaze until early May. Over 500,000 bulbs have been planted in recent years throughout the gardens and Arboretum, including Narcissi, Scilla, Lilies, Anenome, Muscari, Allium, Chinodoxia, Fritilleria, Crocus and Cyclamen. The award-winning Sunken Garden, at the eastern end of the 300 foot Edwardian Pergola, an intimate and sheltered area which has been planted up to provide fragrance and flowers throughout the summer months. Flowering times are Spring and Summer.

A busy line up of garden events and activities offers plenty to interest gardeners, chilli lovers and families. Highlights include Mothering Sunday, Easter Trail and activities for children (March or April), West Dean Arts & Craft Festival (June),  Chilli Fiesta (August), half term Halloween Trail and activities (October) and Father Christmas visits (December). The Gardens Shop sells a wide range of unusual gifts, plants and gardening accessories. The Gardens Restaurant serves delicious home cooked food, including breakfasts, hot lunches, cakes, scones and afternoon teas. Children's menu from £5.50. Free parking. Free admission to Shop and Restaurant.
