Harumika - reviewed for What To Do With The Kids
Harumika is an award winning, unique, fun and easy to use toy that combines art and craft as well as fashion and it's been a big hit with budding fashionistas since its launch in 2009. The simple design technique is easy to pick up and provides hours of creative fun. Young designers can create their very own line of bespoke couture designs without the need for any needles, thread, glue or scissors. It works by layering, folding and customising fabrics and accents using the silicon strip at the back of the dress form. All the materials and accessories are reusable so the possibilities are endless : if you don't like your design just start all over again!
We asked What To Do With The Kids reviewers Sarah and Alice (aged 8) to take a look at the new Harumika Pop Diva Set (pictured) and let us know their opinion.
Sarah: I was intrigued when I read about this toy. Alice loves dressing her dolls but I wasn't sure if she would be interested in this toy, which is essentially a minature tailors dummy, made of plastic, with pieces of fabric.
The set comes with a bodice on a stand and the option to add two different skirt shapes underneath which clip on easliy and change the style of the outfit you make. You can then choose from a selection of fabrics which you can fold round the bodice and tuck into slots at the back. The set also comes with some stickers and stick on jewels you can add to the design.
Initially I thought that Alice would soon get bored as there were only a few pieces to play with, but she spent all afternoon making outfits out of the supplied fabrics and accessories and the next day she went on the hunt for my scarves and any other scraps of fabric around the house, as well as pieces of my broken jewellery and any other bits and pieces she could find and continued to amuse herself with making oufits for a second day. So this toy has provided hours of fun and I think Alice will continue to get lots of enjoyment from it as she continues to experiment with the designs and find new bits and pieces she can use to make outfits.
Alice: I really enjoyed making my own fashions. It was a bit tricky at first to make the dresses neatly but now I can do it easliy. It's better than my Barbies because I can make lots of different outfits.
Harumika is available now, from Argos, Entertainer, John Lewis, Smyths, Tesco, Toymaster, Toys R Us and other good toy stores.
